Dc-Double Crochet
Sc-Single Crochet
Hdc-Half Double Crochet
Sl St-Slip Stitch
St-Stitch
Hints:
*Hat is worked in rounds--do not turn (continue crocheting
in same direction.)
*Close each row with a Slip Stitch to top of first stitch.
*Size increase for size Large/XLarge hat takes place in Row Seven.
*Chains at beginning of each row count as beginning Dc, Hdc, or Sc.
*Hat pictured is size Large/Extra Large.
(This size should also accommodate big hair.)
For size Small/Medium mans hat-
To Begin: Ch 3. Sl St to first ch to form circle. Ch 3.
Work 15 Dc in circle (16 Dc.)
Row One: Ch 1. Sc in same st . Two Sc in each st (32 sc.)
Sl St to top of 1st st.
Row Two: Ch 2. Hdc in each st. (32 Hdc..)
Sl St to top of 1st Hdc.
Row Three: Ch 1. Sc in same st. Two Sc in each st. (64 Sc.)
Sl St to top of 1st Sc.
Row Four: Ch 2. One Hdc in each st. (64 Hdc.)
Sl St to top of 1st Hdc.
Row Five: Ch 1. One Sc in each stitch (64 Sc.)
Sl St to top of 1st Sc.
REPEAT Rows four and five until hat measures 8 inches
from top to bottom, ending with of single crochet.
Tie off/weave-hide yarn ends.
For size Large to Extra Large mans hat-
Follow directions above until you reach Row 7.
Row Seven: Ch 1. Sc in next 12 stitch. 2 Sc in next stitch.
*Sc in next 12 stitches. 2 sc in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of row.
(70 Sc.) Sl St to top of 1st Sc.
Row Eight: Ch 2. Hdc in each st. (70 Hdc)
Sl St to top of 1st Hdc.
Row Nine: Ch 1. One Sc in each stitch (70 Sc.)
Sl St to top of 1st Sc.
REPEAT Rows Eight and Nine until hat measures 8 inches
from top to bottom, ending with Row of single crochet.
Tie off/ weave-hide yarn ends.

pattern correction. on large sizes if you repeat ro 7 and 8 until it reaches 8 inches...you end up with a plate as row 7 continues to increase. you could state add a row 9 that states the same as row 5 and ends with 70 stitches stating to end at 8" with a row 8.

On row 7, I only end up with 68 stitches - how do I increase evenly to get to 70?
Peewee--With the hat laid flat, increase by one stitch on either side of the hat so that the increase of two is worked evenly into the hat.

I am new to crocheting--what is medium (4) worsted weight yarn? Is this the type of yarn? what does the 4 stand for? And how much yarn will I need to complete the small/medium sized hat? Thanks!
Hello Rachel- Thank you for trying my design. The yarn I used is Red Heart Super Saver Solid. I weighted the hat after crocheting it using a digital postage scale and it weighted around 2.3 ounces but each person who crochets one will use different amounts (depending on how tight or loose they crochet.) hopefully a skein of Super Saver will be enough. How many rows does it typically take to get to 8 inches on the large/xl hat? I would like to alternate colors, but I don't know how many rows of each I should do. Thank you for the awesome pattern!

I would like to make this hat with super bulky yarn which uses a 9mm hook. The man's head is 23 1/4". Usually, I'd consider that "large". But given that this calls for a size 8 hook, should I make the smaller size?
